A Heart of Gold

Today, we would have celebrated my dad's 71st birthday.   Instead, he's in heaven at a perpetual party.  I take comfort knowing he's in a better place, but I miss him immensely and today was especially difficult.  I thought about him all day and what a great man he was.  I could write an endless list of qualities that made him so special, but most evident was his heart of gold.

When God talks about gold in the Bible, He talks about something special, something precious, something pure, something rich as we witness in the following verses.

Genesis 13:2 Abraham was very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold.

Exodus 25:17 "You shall make a mercy seat of pure gold; two an a half cubits shall be its length and a cubit and a half its width.

Psalm 21:3 For you meet him with the blessings of goodness; You set a crown of pure gold upon his head.

While my father was not a rich man in earthly possessions, he was absolutely rich in spirit and eternal things that matter like love, kindness, compassion, generosity and everything else that makes up a golden heart.

Thinking about my dad today brought back some very special memories.  For example, every time I was sick, he would say, "I wish I could be sick for you" and I knew he meant it.  Another vivid memory is endless hours on the front porch swing listening to his life lessons, "Always see the good in others", "Let people know that they matter and they're important",  "Love your brother and sister because some day when your mother and I are gone, you'll only have each other", "Your smile always makes my heart happy", "I'm blessed to have such beautiful girls in my life", "You're very special", and most importantly, "I love you with all my heart".

No only did my dad always have a kind heart and encouraging words, but he graciously did the thankless job of a parent like working hard to provide for his family.  He made many sacrifices not just to meet our needs but to give us the extras like dance lessons, swim lessons, cheerleading, baton lessons, skate lessons, karate lessons, private school tuition, pretty outfits for special occasions, and of course big birthday celebrations to remind us that we were special.

When times were tough, he sheltered us from the stress and hardship as much as he could.  He protected us from the cruel world and when I was scared or worried, I found comfort and safety with my father.  I knew I could always depend on him to rescue me from any situation, even when I was wrong and needed correction or discipline; much like our heavenly Father.  Psalm 84:11 tells us, "For the Lord God is a sun and a shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless."

I am selfishly saddened at the thought that this life will never know my father again.  What a loss for everyone he ever influenced, especially me.  But I know that this life is fleeting and there will soon come the day when I get to join him in heaven.  Until then, I will strive to make my time on earth more meaningful by carrying on his legacy of kindness, compassion, and a heart of gold.

Winds of Change

In the past, there have been numerous writings on the winds of change.  Most of them refer to some type of freedom or autonomy.  For instance, in 1989 the German rock band, Scorpions wrote the song, “Winds of Change”.  The lyrics celebrate the end of the Cold War and the beginning of the pervasive fall of Socialist-run governments in eastern-bloc nations where religion was actively suppressed.    

In 1960, British Prime Minister Harold MacMillan addressed the South African Parliament with his “Wind of Change” speech during his African tour.   He suggested an independence movement across the continent, acknowledging that black people in Africa had the right to rule themselves.  His speech also signaled a change in attitude towards the Apartheid regime in South Africa and is considered a milestone in the process of decolonization.  MacMillan said, “"The wind of change is blowing through this [African] continent, and whether we like it or not, this growth of national consciousness is a political fact. We must all accept it as a fact, and our national policies must take account of it."

No doubt, the past century has witnessed progress in the way of social equality and freedom, but morally we are bankrupt.  And today, the term “winds of change” has a more literal connotation for us.  The deadly tornadoes in Oklahoma, the devastating fires in California and of course Sandy, the most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season have proven this accurate.  At least 285 people were killed by Sandy in the seven countries it affected.  Damage has been estimated at more than $53 billion and the lives of those who survived the storm have been forever changed.  In addition, we must not fail to mention Katrina in 2005, one of the deadliest, most expensive and most destructive natural disasters in the history of the United States. 

Natural disasters are no longer occasional catastrophes, in far off countries that we only read about.  They are common headlines consuming our daily lives and all we can do is sit back, in frozen disbelief.  Can it be that God has removed His hand of protection to get our attention? Or possibly, is it a sign of the end times that Jesus warns us about in Matthew 24:7-8 “Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom.  There will be famines are earthquakes in various places.  All these are the beginning of birth pains.”?

Whatever the reason, we must recognize the rapid decline of our society and the urgency of God’s message.  Reverend Billy Graham writes about our moral condition in his book, “Storm Warning”.  “I have not seen such widespread anxiety and depression in people’s hearts as I do today…..The American dream has become America’s god; wealth and abundance have become the measure of America’s success.” 

It is true that we have become too dependent on our stuff.   We must learn to rely more on God’s promises and not on our own assets and abilities.  If we don’t, we will certainly fall short.  John 15:55 says, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”  This message could not be any clearer.  Either we depend on God or we fail completely; all or none.

Unfortunately, too many people are independently seeking peace through self-help books, spiritual guides, meditation, and positive thinking that focuses on creating our own destinies.  While an optimistic attitude will make our lives more enjoyable, it will not prevent the sufferings of this world that God has intentionally allowed; nor can it offer us true peace.  John 16:33 reminds us, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Today, the winds of change signify a more eminent warning and a different type of freedom; one that comes only from God.

I highly recommend reading the book, “Storm Warning” by Reverend Billy Graham.  It gives an accurate account of the storms we are facing today and the one’s yet to come.  It will encourage you to consider your own salvation and where you stand in the eyes of our precious Lord.  

A Letter To My Beautiful Daughter On March 4

March 4 is no ordinary day for me.  As a matter of fact, it is a very special day because it is your birthday; the birthday of my first child and my only daughter.  I know this year is extra special to you because you are turning 21!  It’s special to dad and me because it signifies that you are no longer a child.  You have made your way into adulthood and we could not be more proud of the beautiful young woman that has blossomed right before our eyes.

  

I clearly remember the day you were born and how we smiled because you were so much bigger than the rest of the babies in the nursery – a healthy sign.  I remember being mesmerized by your beauty; big blue eyes, golden curly hair and smooth milky skin (traits that earned your nicknames Goldilocks and Snow White). 

I remember how cute you looked in your plaid blue uniform on your first day of kindergarten and how you cried long after the rest of the students had settled in.

I remember how excited you were at nine years old when your brother Andrew was born.  I also remember that after your baby brother, Eric was born two years later, the excitement of being “big sister” to two vivacious boys, had dwindled to mere toleration. 

I remember buying your first car when you turned 16 and being thankful that you weren't hurt when you wrecked it shortly after. 

I remember feeling such joy as you walked across the stage during your high school graduation and then feeling a sudden panic at the thought of you moving away to college and facing the world on your own for the first time. 

You are now a junior at an acclaimed university that requires much effort and dedication for success and we are so proud of you.  All the memories we've cherished over the past 21 years have resulted in a life that is not just celebrated on March 4, but every day.  God has intentionally created each of us for a specific purpose and I know the birthday He gave you is significant to your calling. 

March 4 is not just another day on the calendar.  It is the only day of the year with a command, “march forth” and it is a reminder for all of us to press ahead; to walk on.  Walk according to God’s plan as He reminds us, “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”  Jeremiah 29:11

You have always been faithful to walk through life’s issues with grace and beauty.  You know who’s in control of your life and you submit with such trust and hope.  I know that God’s plans for hope and a future will continue to unfold in your life because you have heeded to His calling.  And remember, “Many are called, but few are chosen.”  Matthew 22:14 

I pray that God places His hand of favor over you today and every day of your future including your education, your career, your marriage, your children, your health, your finances and every area that He weaves into your life.  

I thank God for choosing me to be your mother and for trusting me with such a precious jewel.  I thank you for being such a blessing in our lives and bestowing such kindness and compassion to those around you.

I know that God was thinking of you when He wrote, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”  Jeremiah 1:5. 

Happy birthday to my sweet girl and blessings for many more.  May you continue to march forth in God’s will and appointment for your chosen life!

It's Not Political, It's Biblical

As the presidential election draws near, Americans are pledging their support to the candidate who best suits their political interests.  While I have definitely taken a firm side on this debate, I consider myself neither Republican nor Democrat and I have no real political agenda.  As a matter of fact, politics don’t excite me.  I find the subject rather boring and redundant.  It’s not that I don’t care about the welfare of our government and our country.  It’s that I don’t care about the misleading, hypocritical and downright untruthful banter that so often volleys among politicians.  And this year’s election is no exception. 

I can honestly say that I don’t “like” one candidate over the other.  I think both have had interesting things to say about how he will turn the economy around.  I also think that both would be hard-pressed to keep every promise he’s made.  In summary, both have asserted to make this country a better place.  The general promises are no different than the declarations of every other candidate in the history of U.S. presidential elections.  Overall, I’m not impressed.

However, it’s not to say that my attention has not been piqued.  I may not be impressed, but I’m very concerned.  This country was founded on Christian values.  Not through our own discovery or innovation, but by God’s plan for His American people, hence “One nation under God”.   And while America continues to evolve as a beautiful melting pot of some very diverse cultures and traditions, God’s plan for His people to honor Him as the ultimate authority has not changed.

 Our Founding Fathers referenced the Bible for confirmation of their ideas when establishing our government.  America is unique in its formation of government because our original leaders had many years of history from older countries to consider what worked and what failed.  The resounding conclusion was that neither the church nor state should have absolute authority.  Rather, there should be a balance between church and state.  Unfortunately, that balance has become lop-sided.  Public institutions have banned prayer, the name of Jesus is forbidden and many more anti-Christian policies and practices are now accepted as the norm. 

“For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder.  And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”  Isaiah 9:6.  How can we expect our government to stand firm if we have abandoned our trust in Jesus?

Earlier this year, in an interview with ABC correspondent, Robin Roberts, President Obama said, “I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”  This is just a portion of the interview.  Obama goes on to say more of the same thing and to justify his decision. 

Now before I continue, let me commence by clarifying that I have nothing against homosexuals.  I have friends and loved ones who label themselves as gay and lesbian and I love them dearly.  I am not prejudice and I try not to pass judgment on anyone.  I have enough flaws of my own to correct.  In addition, every time I point my accusing finger at someone else, I have three pointing right back at me.  Try it.

In the interview, Obama also claims to be Christian, but there is nothing Christian about the stand he has taken for same sex marriages.  God is not ambivalent or obscure about how He created us to be in relationship with one another. 

“Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.”  I Corinthians 6:9-11

“If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.” Leviticus 20:13

These are just a few scriptures that reveal God’s distinct command on this matter.  Though His message is clear, I find the subject a little murky.  Therefore, my debate on this topic is brief because I have no argument other than, “It’s what the Bible says.”  And when surges of opposing, insoluble questions arise, I refer to Isaiah 55:8-9 which states, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.  “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”  I then humbly ask myself, “Who am I to argue with God?” 

If I agreed with Obama on every other issue at hand in this election, I would still be obligated to offer him no support because of his direct defiance against God’s Word.  My allegiance to my heavenly Father is greater than my allegiance to anyone else, including the leader of my country.  I do believe in equal rights for everyone as long as they do not violate the Word of God. 

The lax moral standards of today’s society have encouraged many of us to be apathetic about our convictions; sometimes in the name of equality or peace or even compassion.  And personally, nothing hurts and angers me more than to see others oppressed and afflicted.  But do not be deceived.  Interpreting the Word of God in a way that justifies our own belief system does not change It.  “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” Hebrews 13:8.  Even though times have changed significantly and the morale of civilization continues to decline, the promises and warnings of God remain unchanged.

Start In The Backyard

The other day, my nine-year-old son was feeling under the weather so I kept him home from school.  We were sitting on the couch watching one of my favorite television evangelists and the message about Jesus was so inspiring that I turned to my young son and said, “I think it would be pretty cool to be an evangelist or even a Bible teacher.” 

He simply responded, “Well, why don’t you?”

I thought about it for a few seconds (truly pondering the question) and answered, “I just don’t know where to start.”

What I really meant was that I don’t have any formal theological education (and it would cost me in the tens of thousands to get one).  I’m not as knowledgeable about the Bible as I would expect from a Bible teacher.  I really don’t like speaking to crowds (although I've become much more comfortable).  I've always earned an income and where would it now come from?

The excuses just kept flowing through my mind when he responded with such an unassuming confidence.  “Why don’t you just start in the backyard?  You could invite a few people over and talk to them about Jesus.  It’s no big deal.”

Wow, how simple is that? What a novel idea!  I can just start here.  I don’t have to make any drastic life changes or wait for better timing.   I should begin right where I’m at with what I’ve got.  His suggestion reminds me of Jesus’ command to start now.  Now is the accepted time.  Not tomorrow.  Not when we get our lives in order.  Not when we feel better prepared.  Whatever that first step means to us, we need to take it now. 

“In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.  Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” 2 Corinthians 6:2. 

God has created each and every one of us for a specific purpose.  And He doesn’t turn us loose in an aimless attempt to figure it all out on our own.  He intentionally places desires and interests in our hearts leading us to fulfill His perfect purpose.  As long as we look to Him for guidance, our paths will be divinely directed.  “Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.”  Psalm 37:4

We were not put here to muddle through life trapped in fruitless, unrewarding careers that provide little more than a paycheck.  Too many of us have big plans to follow our life dreams once we retire or once the kids get older.  Perhaps we’re weary from encountering too many obstacles.  Regardless of all the hurdles, we are created to live each day in our dreams and we can do that by fixing our eyes on Jesus. 

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.  And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the Pioneer and Perfecter of our faith.  For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”  Hebrews 12:1-3

Maybe your heart’s desire is to pursue a new career or devote more time to a favorite hobby (even getting your photography or baking skills to earn money for you).  Maybe there’s a tugging in your spirit to make minor adjustments to your life by being a more intentional parent or by stepping up your game as the nutritional gatekeeper for your family.  

Possibly, accomplishing items on your bucket list like running a marathon, learning a new language or going on a mission trip will give you the discipline and self-control you need to grow into your destiny.  Whatever your calling is, don’t delay.  Take one step at a time and let the Perfecter of your faith guide you.  Don’t make it more difficult than it really is and never underestimate the power of simplicity by starting right where you’re at with what you’ve got.  As my son so cleverly suggested, “Just start in the backyard.”

Be Still

Time and time again, the Bible commands us to place our trust in God.  But, too often, we are tempted to take matters into our own hands and blindly endeavor to solve problems to which we have no answers.  From life changing issues to simple daily decisions, our first step should always be to “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

Recently, my 11-year-old son was invited to a sleep-over birthday party.  He was so excited that I immediately said yes and became excited with him.  The invitation explained that they would spend the evening at a family entertainment center playing laser tag and bowling.  Afterward, they would head home to watch movies and spend the night. 

It wasn’t until later, during the evening of the party, that I decided to glance over the invitation and check out what my pre-teen might be doing just about now, when I noticed the time they planned to head home.  2 a.m.!

“What”, I gasped.  “That can’t be right.  They’re only 11!”  Hearing my outburst, my husband emerged to investigate.

I accused, “Did you know they are staying out until 2a.m.?” 

“Yeah,” he answered.  “I thought that was kind of strange, but you gave him permission so I assumed you had cleared the details.”

A warm flood of anger covered my face and I began, “What kind of parents allow their 11-year-old to stay out until 2a.m.? 

And then I targeted my husband, “I can’t believe you knew this and didn’t say anything.  What’s the matter with you?” 

But the final criticism was most crushing when I thought, “What kind of mother allows her young child to attend a party without knowing the details?”
 

My stomach began to ache and a persistent worry ensued with one question after another.  Should I just pick him up and truthfully explain that I am not comfortable with him being out so late? If so, I would not only humiliate him in front of his friends, I would, in no uncertain terms, let the mother know that I thought her parenting skills were void. 

Or should I do nothing, knowing I’d be up all night worried about my precious one?  What about the types of people wandering at that time?  Drunks, druggies, people up to no good…..

NO WAY!  I’m much more concerned about the safety of my child than what other people think about me!  It’s settled.  I’m calling to say I’ll be there to pick him up sooner and I’ll deal with the consequences later.

But before I could gallop on my merry way, my husband expressed his opposition.  “You can’t just pick him up.  You’ve already told him he could spend the night.”

Ugh!  The frustration began to settle deeper and the fear began to bind when an all-consuming impression directed me to “Be still.”  I know the commands well. They are some of the most comforting verses.

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalm 46:10 and again, “The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.” Exodus 14:14.

I had the directive.  Now, I needed the obedience.  So I began to pray, “Dear Lord, please help me make the right decision.  Give me guidance and direction.  Know the anxieties of my heart and give me peace and comfort.” 

An immediate calm came over me and I fully surrendered my dilemma to God.  Although the devil tried to instill doubt by reminding me that God doesn’t speak to people audibly (so I’d never get a real answer), I thought of it no more. 

Within a half hour, I received a text message from the birthday boy’s mother stating that she was just told they would have to leave the facility early due to the scheduling of a private party.  She was furious that she wasn’t notified earlier, but management had appeased her by giving each child a voucher to come back for FREE on the day of his choice. She was sorry that the boys were disappointed, but they would be going home at 11p.m. to watch movies until they fell asleep. 

Wow!  What an awesome God I serve.  I allowed Him to solve my problem and in true Character, He did more!  It is during times like these that I am humbled by His Greatness and inspired by His Truth!   

Nothing is too insignificant to command God’s full attention to work together for our good as long as we allow Him.

Celebrating Life and Death

Last week, my beautiful son, Andrew, celebrated his 11th birthday. Though we had a big celebration with friends during the prior weekend, we quietly honored his actual birthday with a simple dinner and his favorite dessert because we were notified that his 84 year old paternal grandfather was succumbing to a long illness. Last night, my father-in-law went to be with our Lord. Many may call it a bitter-sweet time, but I try to count it all joy as I am reminded in Ecclesiastes 7:1 "A good name is better than precious ointment; and the day of death is better than the day of one's birth."

While we celebrate life with birthdays year after year, believers are promised that the day of death is even better. And, additional cause for celebration is the good name we are ascribed at our birth which distinguishes who we are and how we are identified in the Lamb’s Book of Life.

Revelation 21:27 explains “But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.”

I cannot do real justice to my father-in-law’s admirable name in just a few short paragraphs, but I can humbly offer a slice of who he was. Pablo Ximenez was first and foremost, a man of God. His love for Jesus was transparent in all he said and did. To begin with, he and his wife Christina were married for more than 63 years. That alone attests to his commitment and loyalty.

Together, they raised and supported nine children on one very modest income. And although his days were filled with a steady job and his evenings were occupied with issues arising from nine children, he still managed to attend church every Sunday, minister to troubled souls in jail and lead music ministry and Bible study for his church group. He was not a man of many words, but his faithful actions were the influence he bestowed on his children. In addition, there was always a glow of peace and joy about him. And still, I must not fail to mention the remarkable self-control and dignity he maintained during difficult times.

He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease more than 13 years ago and while his health deteriorated, the memories of a noble man never did. We can only speculate the reasons God allows hardships and sufferings to come over us. And I speculate his reason was a lesson to those of us around him. He was the perfect essence of how one can endure adversity with grace and beauty.

I write this, not just as a testament of who Pablo Ximenez was, but with high hopes of who my children can be through his legacy. I see my son, Andrew, with many of the same strengths his grandfather had and his father now has and I am confident that his young life is on the path to fulfilling the perfect purpose for which God created him.

Though we may be saddened by the physical loss of our loved one, we celebrate his rebirth into eternity with Jesus and the continuation of life through his children and their children and all to come. We rest assured that his name is written in the Lamb’s Book of Life and he has been called good and faithful servant.

Perfect Peace

The holidays are upon us and most people would scoff at the idea of finding peace, let alone finding perfect peace. Studies show that depression and suicide increase during this supposed joyous season. The bar has been set so high and demands are so extreme that the holidays have become just one more excuse for stress and anxiety to rule our lives. Celebrating the birth of Jesus is frequently overshadowed by shopping, finances and other holiday-related issues.

Ironically, the whole reason for the season is actually a peace offering. “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6.

Jesus warns us that we will face difficulties, but encourages us to remain peaceful in John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

So how do we maintain peace in our lives when the world around us seems to be crumbling?

1. Pray – Although God already knows of your needs before you ask, share your concerns with Him and rest assured that He’s got your back. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7.

2. Give God thanks and praise – No matter how dismal our situation seems, thanking God for all the blessings in our lives and focusing on the positives will diminish our problems and allow Him to continue blessing us. Keep in mind that grumbling and complaining put a kink in the plumb line of blessings. “I will give thanks to the LORD because of his righteousness; I will sing the praises of the name of the LORD Most High.” Psalm 7:17

3. Keep the faith – Faith is having confidence or trust in something that we cannot prove, so when we cannot see a reasonable result, we must have faith that God is working on our behalf. ”You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Isaiah 26:3.

While we were not put on this earth to live perfect lives or to skirt every oncoming obstacle, we can maintain perfect peace because we know that God will use every situation we endure to work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. “Great peace have those who love Your law, and nothing causes them to stumble.” Psalm 119:165

Merry Christmas and “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men!” Luke 2:14.

Do Not Be Deceived

When we look at the condition of our world today, it’s apparent that we’ve all been deceived in some way or another. From overt deceptions inciting, the more the merrier, to subtle delusions that we’ll be just fine because everyone else is doing it, most of us are misled into following worldly ways. No doubt, there’s trouble hiding behind those fallacies as Romans 12:2 indicates, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Jesus also warns us in Matthew 24:4-5 “Take heed that no one deceives you. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and will deceive many.

To grasp a deeper understanding of the word deceit, I looked up its definition and the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as dishonest; behavior meant to fool or trick someone, concealment of the truth. Its antonyms are truth, honesty, and sincerity. Since Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and the opposite of truth is deception, we can conclude that deception comes from the enemy. And we’re all aware that the enemy comes only to steal, to kill, and to destroy so falling into worldly ways will surely lead us to destruction.

Satan began deceiving the world in the Garden of Eden when he tricked Eve into eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and he hasn’t stopped since. While we are clearly no longer in the Garden of Eden, we are still under his attacks (and more so today because he knows his time is very limited). He also knows that most of us aren’t willing to deliberately bow down and worship the devil, so he’s become very creative in concealing his identity to trick us into sin and evil. After all, he is the Master Deceiver and the Father of all Lies. Satan wants you to believe that:

1. God is holding out on you and He’s trying to keep good things from you, but God says, “I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you, not to harm you; plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

2. Money is the key to happiness, but God says, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” 1 Timothy 6:10

3. You can trust and act upon your own thoughts and feelings, but God says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” Proverbs 3:5-6

4. Hell and the devil don’t really exist, but God says, “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Revelation 21:8 and "Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8

Although the devil is consciously fighting a lost battle, he will continue his deceptive schemes until the end of our earthly time. When in doubt, refer to the only source of absolute truth, the Holy Bible and fear not because we have an Advocate who is the atoning sacrifice for our sins. No matter how much adversity we encounter, we can rest assured that victory is ours because Jesus tells us in John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Discipline (not desire) Determine Destiny

There are so many things that I desire to do.  Some aspirations are recent and some dreams I’ve had ever since I can remember.  Whatever the goal, I’ve come to realize that it takes more than desire to accomplish anything.  It takes discipline.

Proverbs 5:22-23 tell us, “The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them; the cords of their sins hold them fast.  For lack of discipline they will die, led astray by their own great folly.”  Those seem to be extreme consequences because I’ve never considered lack of discipline resulting in death or deception.  But no matter how we choose to perceive this proverb, it clearly warns us that the absence of discipline leads to no good.

Jesus is Coming Back!

Bible-believing Christians know that Jesus is coming back for us because Matthew 25:31-32 tells us, “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, He will sit on His glorious throne.  All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.”

In addition to these verses, there are many more references in the Bible that foretell the return of Jesus for His people. The $64,000 question seems to be when?  Throughout history, futurists have incorrectly predicted the date of His return, sending packs of people into chaos and fear even though the Bible clearly tells us that no one knows when. “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father,” Mark 13:32.

Most recently, a global advertising campaign, spending enormous amounts of money is predicting that May 21, 2011 is the big day and it even goes as far to claim that through hidden mysteries, the Bible guarantees this is The Day!  I’ve read the reasoning (and the Bible) and I’m still unable to completely comprehend exactly how they’ve drawn to their absolute conclusions, but the real question is, “Does it really matter?”  In the dozens of articles I’ve read and researched regarding this apocalyptic prediction, the only concern seems to be with determining the date.  Nowhere have I read about the importance of His return and how we should be preparing for that glorious day whether it happens to be tomorrow or long after I’ve left this earth.



We should not be so consumed with when, but more with what.  What am I doing to serve Him faithfully and to fulfill His perfect plan for my life?  What am I doing to live a godly life, not just for my own salvation, but for unbelievers’ whose only glimmer of God may be the light He shines through me?  What am I doing to spread the good news of His promise that all turmoil in this world will be wiped away and there will be no more sorrow or pain?  What am I doing to live the abundant life that He died to give me, filled with peace, joy and love?



What I do in preparation for that wonderful day of the Second Coming is much more important than the actual day itself.  That day does me no good if I’m not prepared. In 2 Corinthians 6:2, He tells us, “In the time of My favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.”



Do not allow another day to pass without intentional purpose and preparation for your eternal life because although we are guaranteed of His return, we are not guaranteed salvation.  As a matter of fact, we know that not everyone will be saved because He warns us in Matthew 7:22-23, “Many will say to me on that day, “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?”  Then I will tell them plainly, “I never knew you, away from me you evildoers!”



So in conclusion to all this end-times hoopla, I’ve decided that I won’t jump on any fanatic bandwagons and sell all my belongings or celebrate like there’s no tomorrow (I’ll have plenty of time for that in heaven), but I will be obedient to His Word expecting to hear Him say, “Well done, good and faithful servant.  Come and share your Master’s happiness.”

From Mess to Message-What is Your Story?

Let's face it.  We all have a story, a messy one.  I have yet to meet a single person who doesn’t have regrets or disappointments.  We’ve all had instances and experiences that we wish we could erase from our past; some of those instances producing uncomfortable or even lifelong consequences.  Furthermore, the old adage, “Hindsight is 20/20,” just confirms the probability of former flawed decisions.  Fortunately, none of us have to remain in the past nor do we have to live with the guilt or shame that may have stemmed.  Romans 8:1-2 tells us, “Therefore, there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.” 

The Power of a Name

Many of us are familiar with the power of a name.  Whether it’s your own name or someone you know, we have all experienced the weight that names and titles can carry.  For example, the title President, generally describes someone with the authority to make important decisions. The title, Medical Doctor, typically refers to someone deemed capable of diagnosing and treating illnesses.  The title, Mom, most often signifies someone who will love, accept and understand you more than any other human being.  Needless to say, there are powers and privileges in a mere name. However, all of these names still have limitations.  There is only one name with infinite ability and that name is Jesus! 

Philippians 2:9-11 tell us, “Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus, every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue shall acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Don't Miss the Boat (of Salvation)

There was once a man who was stranded at home during a flood.  As the waters rose, he assured himself that Jesus would save him.  Just then, a boat came by and asked if he needed help and the man answered, “No, I’m waiting for someone else to come get me.”  The waters continued to rise when another boat came by and asked if he needed help and again he answered, “No thank you, I’m waiting for someone else to come get me.”  A little while later, a third boat came by and pleaded with him to get in, seeing that the man was already standing on his rooftop with the waters rising quickly and again the man answered, “No, I’m waiting for someone else to come get me.”  Shortly after that, the waters rose above his rooftop and drowned him. 

Feeling that he had been left to die, the man angrily stomped passed the pearly gates, straight to Jesus and said, “Where were you, I waited for you to come get me and you never showed up.”

Jesus answered, “I sent three boats for you and you never got in.”

Receive God's Gifts!

Driving home from the mall the other day, my seven year old son blurts out, “Mom, you are the best mom in the whole wide world and I love you so much.”  My heart leaped with joy, but considering that he had been disciplined a few times that day, I curiously asked, “Why do you think that?”

I sheepishly confess that I anticipated a juvenile, unsophisticated answer, but his faithful response spoke volumes to me.  He said, “Because even though I was a little bit bad today, you still bought me something special.  It lets me know that you still love me and you’re not angry with me.”

As I chuckled to myself at his conservative opinion about being just "a little bit" bad, I was moved by his humble gratitude and complete understanding of where he still stood with me.  Even though his behavior was less than praiseworthy, he knew that my grace and mercy continued to embrace him.  Regardless of his faults, my love for him remains the same, similar to what is written in Psalm 100:5, “For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.”   

I don’t make a habit of presenting my children with gifts when they are disobedient, but there are times when I want to bless them with goodness no matter what mistakes they’ve made.  In doing so, it reminds me that God feels the same way about us as He tells us in Matthew 7:11 “If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask Him!”

Many of us do not come to God’s throne expectant or willing to accept His gifts because we don’t think we deserve them.  We either fear that He’s angry with us or we hold out on Him until we can “get our act together” or “put our lives in order.”  The truth is that no matter where we are (or aren’t) in our spiritual journey, none of us are worthy of God’s goodness, but He is still faithful to bless us because He loves us so much.  All we have to do is ask!  How simple is that?  God does not treat us as our sins deserve, rather He tells us that as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His love for us. 

I rest assured in this promise because despite all my iniquities, I look around and see constant blessings in my life.  No matter what I do, He is still the same loving, forgiving, gracious God.  He wants us to trust in Him the same way we long for our own children to trust in us. He desires that we stand before Him boldly and expectantly knowing that whatever we ask in His name, according to His will, He is ready to give.  Matthew 7:7-8 declares, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

Your problems and circumstances are no surprise to God because He knows the end from the beginning.  He is completely able to identify with our sufferings because He, too, walked the earth, fully man.  He faced all of the same testings and trials that we do plus much more! “So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive His mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” Hebrews 4:16

God did not come to condemn us for our evil ways.  Instead, He came to call us to repentance and bless us abundantly.  Our Heavenly Father is rich in mercy and grace and all that is good. So call upon Him today knowing that He is faithful to respond no matter how undeserving we are!

God Is Doing a New Thing!

Last year was a very grueling year for me.  In my career, I was forced to make decisions I never imagined I would have to make.  And once I made those decisions, I endured consequences I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.  After nearly eight glorious years of happily running my own business publishing magazines and believing I had settled into my lifelong purpose, I was suddenly called in a different direction.  For more than a year, I deliberately ignored the new vision I felt God was impressing upon me.  “Certainly, He must not realize that I don’t need a new dream because I love my job and I'm very pleased with my life,” I thought. 

I prayed for more spiritual growth in my business hoping to steer God back to my plan and when that didn’t work, I began to bargain with Him making deals and promises – all to no avail.  The longer I ignored Him, the worse things got.  Sales that had once sky-rocketed were barely trickling in and clients who’d been faithful for years had all but vanished, pinching pennies in hopes of keeping their own businesses afloat. 
  

As I continued with my own plans down my own path, minor snags became colossal problems. The more I tried, the more obstacles I created.  There was no longer anything I could do in my own strength to get the business back on track and the passion and fire that had been the driving force for so many years were hardly a flicker. 

I woke up one day and realized this was not the vision I had for myself and more significantly, it couldn’t be the vision God had for me either.  Nowhere in His Word does He encourage us to stress, toil or be anxious.  As a matter of fact, He says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6

So I feebly relinquished my selfish determination and presented this simple request, “I am here to do Your will.  Please guide me and give me the strength to follow You into all You have created me to be.”  And although I’d like to say that my situation transformed instantly, it didn’t.  However, God was immediate to hear my prayer and to let me know He was working on my behalf with plans to prosper me and to give me hope and a future.

I have since moved to a different city, finalized the closing of the business and started a new career, but still I see God doing a new and exciting thing!  So many opportunities have come my way, stirring long lost dreams and desires.  Each day I awake is a new adventure and He is so faithful to do as He promises in Isaiah 43:19 “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Today, I encourage you to surrender your life to God and know He is faithful to do good things.  Even when our eyes cannot see and our minds cannot fathom a reasonable result, God will make a way.  He reminds us in Isaiah 55:8-9  “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”

Trusting Him is so exciting and rewarding even when my limited vision cannot see the way!

The Light of the World

In a recent conversation with a former colleague, I innocuously professed the goodness of God and His many blessings in my life.  As I excitedly gushed and raved about my wonderful Jesus, a dark, defensive mood oozed from her spirit and filled the room.  Puzzled, I quieted down and apprehensively awaited her response.  Had I said something wrong?  Was there a valid reason why she seemed so offended?

What came next couldn’t have been more appalling and disappointing.  An array of heartbreaking emotions swirled as she blatantly denied the existence of God and denounced the belief of Christianity.  In a lifeless tone, she said, “I don’t believe there is a God.  I believe there may be a higher energy that the world creates, but I’ve never had any reason to think that a real god exists.  I’m agnostic and we believe there is no proof that substantiates the existence of God." 

As if the fact that she was standing before me, breathing, healthy and employed wasn’t enough proof of His unmerited favor over her life, I composed myself and feverishly began to defend my Friend and ultimately blurted out, “The Pharisees needed proof and look what happened to them.” 

As tensions grew, I was passionately ready to duke it out and go toe to toe with her when a firm, silent voice in my spirit said, “It isn’t your job to prove that God exists, it is your job to act like He exists.” 

I was then reminded of Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”  

What a sobering and accurate message!  I am here as a vessel for the Light of Christ to shine through me.  Whether it is a contagious joyful spirit, an unfaltering faith during difficult times or a peace that surpasses all understanding, others should see something so significant and outstanding in me that they would be impressed to believe a much greater power is within me than anything I could possess in my own strength.  My calling is not to force my beliefs on others or to fight for the truth in His name, but to allow Him to prove Himself through me.   Ezekiel 20:41 says, “I will accept you as fragrant incense when I bring you out from the nations and gather you from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will be proved holy through you in the sight of the nations.

How liberating it is to know I am not responsible for ensuring that others believe the truth.  I can just stand firm in hopes that they see the truth!

A Different Kind of Resolution

I woke up this morning with a pit in my stomach that exuded guilt, shame and a little sadness.  As I cleared my head and gathered my thoughts, the reason for this heaviness became quite obvious.  It is December 31 and not only does it mark the end of a challenging year, but it also marks a reminder that I fell short of accomplishing the goals and resolutions I had set for 2010. 

I didn’t lose all the weight I had committed to lose.  My bank account reflects that I don’t have the amount of money I strived to acquire and my closets (along with a few other things in my house) indicate that I didn’t get as organized as I promised I would.

In conclusion, I think it is safe to say (by anyone’s standards) that I was failure.  Wow! That’s a brutal label and definitely hard to swallow.  While I’ve had a few letdowns and disappointments in my life, I’ve never considered myself a failure.  But isn’t the definition of a failure something that neglects to meet its expectations? And didn’t I?

Just as soon as the mocking voice in my spirit jeered, “failure, failure, failure,” a stronger, calming, comforting voice spoke “loved, blessed, worthy, pleasing, precious…” So, as I search for the truth of who or what I really am, I stand on the promise of God’s word that tells me:

I am loved – “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”  John 3:16

I am forgiven – “And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses.”  Colossians 2:13

I am favored – “For they did not gain possession of the land by their own sword, nor did their own arm save them; but it was Your right hand, Your arm, and the light of Your countenance, because You favored them:  Psalm 44:3

I am chosen – “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”  Luke 10:2

I am precious - “How precious also are Your thoughts about me, O God!  How great is the sum of them.” Psalm 140:17

I am fearless – “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and of love and of a sound mind.”  2 Timothy 1:7

I am victorious – “What then shall we say of these things:  If God is for us, who can be against us?”  Romans 8:31

I am healed – “But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him and by His stripes we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5

I am redeemed – “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace.” 
Ephesians 1:7

I am heard – “I love the Lord because He has heard my voice and my supplications.” Psalm 116:1

I am protected – “For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; In the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.” Psalm 27:7

I am an overcomer - "You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world."  1 John 4:4

I am saved - "And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." Matthew 1:21

There are so many more wonderful things that God has to say about me.  So this year, I’ve decided that my resolutions will be different than previous years.  Rather than committing to accomplish anything in my own strength and almost certainly falling short by mid-February or possibly March (if I’m lucky), I pledge to follow the lead of my Sweet Jesus and to heed to the calling of His voice that says, “I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11.  This year, I won’t be a failure and this I know because the Bible tells me so!
